Tennis seems to be so boring without Djokovic and Federer these days. Agree or not but Murray doesnt have that charisma that Federer/Nadal has brought to the table and to a certain extent Djokovic these days with his funny personna. No doubt, organisers want them to play. My favorite thesedays is Djokovic for his unbelievable streak this year and the way he has sweated it out to do the unthinkable.
If you want to read, here is a good article i found while surfing the net for exciting tennis coverage: http://bit.ly/qTlozk : Djokovic and His Success Secret: Worth reading!

djokovic n federer be back soon...they are camping in cornwall.

@ Sandy:
or r u Chris or Christina or Apeksha .....????
You are back again with your "blah blah blah..i was surfing the net and found this interesting article....."

Posted by Matt - Allez, Roger! Come on, Serena!

Everything is so boring without Roger and Novak.

Now do we realize how important it is for us to appreciate Roger while he's here? The game simply won't be the same without him.

We'd be better off just handing Andy the trophy right now.

Matt, don't be so fast handing Murray the trophy. Kei is red hot, and either spaniard will be capable of winning the title on Sunday. Fed is getting old and less motivated, no matter he says. Sooner or later, we will have to do without him.

only whiners like to whine about fed because fed is the king of the whiners. artists do not trump great competitors except in the loser/whiner's eye.

Is there a repeat function on this site where I can just say, "Great writing, Steve, loved it" over and over again? :)

Late late late but I love these notebook posts. :)

Windowgate. LOL.

Shallow I realise but the sheer physical beauty of a Lopez-Ferrer semi-final will draw me in. :)

i would love to see Nishikori win his semifinal match later. It would be very interesting 2012 for Asian players.

Thank you for praising Nishikori's tennis. He finally came out from tragic injury. Nishikori played at his best against Dolgopolov and showed his fun and smart tennis to the world.

Sadly in Japan, tennis popularity has declined so much that there is not much coverage about tennis any more.

Nishikori is the only hope for tennis fans.

nishikori has a nice game - efficient technique and now good tactics as well. a nice combo of bollettieri and gilbert, like come to think of it - agassi. and he's a good competitor too - great heart and never-say-die attitude.

good to see him fulfilling his potential and especially as the lone good asian in the lone asian master's tourney. he may surprise us today ..

it is boring without Novak around to amaze us. Wish I'd seen Ferrer's last couple of matches, though.

Kei is exciting. Both men are hitting widely, wildly.

Steve, I think I know the very school with screaming kids you mean. Last night two neighbors of mine were complaining about that very thing. They do sound like it's a break at the Screaming Banshee Academy.

Tallboyslim...kindly IGNORE @chris/apeksha/sandy...
maybe,then,he/she will stop posting that link and stop "irritating" you!

Interesting that Mayer was sick in his match against the other Flo. That, plus the toll of taking an extra large scalp, probably was enough to do him in. Even against Pretty Boy Flo.

nice write up. Wish I'd seen Kei-Dolgo instead of watching Florian Mayer (formerly of Kraftwerk) have an off day. David may not be exciting, but he's as tough as they come, and he deserves a big title. As much as I love Murray and prefer his tennis, I want Ferru to win tomorrow.

since you mentioned challenge 'ethics', there was a moment in the Feli-David match when David successfully challenged a call despite a "that was totally out" raised hand from Feli. The commies were divided as to how innocent Feli's gesture was (fwiw, I give him the benefit of the doubt, and I don't even really like him).

also, for anyone who was confused by the reference to Florian's artistic past (don't let the surname fool you)
http://covers.a-go.in/max/kraftwerk_-_1973_ralf_und_florian.jpg

tennis in japan will become more popular with your new project45 bloke.

***oh dear those federer / djokovic withdrawal symptoms are getting worse for some of you... theyll be back soon...any news on djokovic back strain ??.

"Now do we realize how important it is for us to appreciate Roger while he's here? The game simply won't be the same without him."

I've been saying the same thing for the last four years, but people were too much in love with Nadal. Baaad mistake. Huge.

I have not missed Roger so much, as I missed Novak playing in China. Tennis is not the same without Djokovic and his charisma.

Lillian

I have not missed. anybody in Asia but I missed the best game of Nadal
Please Nadal, come back soon, the tennis looks different and boring when you don't play your best!!!!!!

Nice to know you can see for miles and miles.

Its kinda funny how at the beginning of the the year the next wave of young talent seemed so far from being all gathered near or in the top 50, but here they all are getting direct entry except for Harrison who had to qualify this time, and Berankis who is back on the challenger tour, slowly coming back from injury.

What I like about Raonic today was that he is always looking to be agressive, but I saw that Llodra actually had more winners in the stats than Raonic did, so while Llodra is overall more consistent and puts what appears to be effortless volleys in hard to reach places, Raonic is forcing errors with his power, but more so on the important points than Llodra is able to do. And yeah, the muted celebration is a little creepy, but Raonic just seems to be saying, "I got a lot of work to do if I want to get my matches over in 2 sets."

Posted by Annie (Vamos Heavenly Creature)

hey Philip, did you see the post I left you on the Deuce Club in answer to a couple of questions you had?

Posted by Annie (Vamos Heavenly Creature)

Are we in the post-Djokovic phase already?

grigor dimitrov has every shot going but he still gets confused, he could be a bit like federer if he sorts his head out also.

yay, Milos,

I like how business like these young guys like Raonic and A-Tomic are; maybe Ryan Harrison could take a page from their book?

Annie said, "Philip, if you're still around, who are your faves and how did you get interested in tennis - how did you find TW?"

Sorry Annie, I didn't get back to the Deuce post because there are over ten pages of comments but I found your questions. It was 1983 and I was watching Yannick Noah win the French Open. From that point on I liked Noah, then waited over a decade for Ivanisevic to win Wimbledon. Now I am waiting for another French player to win a slam. Being Canadian, I like what I am seeing in Raonic's game a lot and would like him to be the next 'American' to win a slam. I found a link to Tennisworld from the old Tennisweek website and like to comment when the thread is pretty consistent. Ironically, I just feel that when the post is about having new people comment and then the comments after a few hours are way off topic it kind of discourages new people from commenting. I am not really concerned about being a known commentator but just like it when the comments are on topic and my comments fit in the thread.

if a tennis ball us struck in a stadium and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

Yeah d, the stadium seems pretty empty for a masters. Maybe they should give some tickets away to promote the event.

I watched the Roddick-Dimitrov match. Dimitrov should have won the second, as he was playing really well at the beginning of that set. Overall, I thought Roddick played well enough. I wish he would flatten out his forehand more. Over the years, he has definitely become more "conservative" with that shot.

semi otter face = the atomic tomic.

I think Pete, what you have said is completely true that Ferrer's position is enviable. He is not succeeding like his counter part but definitely he is making up his life and trying his best!. He has no pressure and enjoying his game. I come and read your article regularly and am a constant fan and through this I cam across this also (http://bit.ly/nQAplv). This article also summarises the same that in life, tennis records will be broken and you might not achieve your goals but its important to try for your goals and make your life! Nice reading!

Sorry it should be steve. Read Pete's article before urs so somehow didnt realise wrote his name.

Nonetheless, Good article Steve!

@arnie
(or r u Chris or r u Apeksha ???)
You tried harder this time. You did not post a one-liner. You made more conversation. But your goal was the same ....to send us to some motivatinal tennis blog.
I ask you again....r u trying to use this forum to advertise and get more hits for ur blog ????

i have to google matthew ebden...

That line about being No. 6 instead of No. 1 -- and still getting the dough -- is oh so terribly cynical. I think any player who has worked as hard as Ferrer would love to get to No. 1 for any amount of time and/or win a Grand Slam and take all the good and bad that comes with it. And be talked about more than just that guy who hit the ball at the baby.

As Billie Jean King wisely once said: Pressure is a privilege.

I did like your bricklayer analogy, though.

"The courts in Shanghai and Paris are quicker than those used at the other 1000s"

Isn't Cincinnati faster than Shanghai?

@arnie

Here are some examples that have prompted me to believe that you use ultiple names and comments to point us (deceptively) to you blog. Let me be clear, I don't have any problems abt it. I just think you do it in an underhanded way. Just come up and be honest.

Talking about Sampras and Federer, here is a good one:
http://bit.ly/nQAplv (Federer, Sampras and Emerson-The Myth of Invincibility)

Makes you realise that noone including Nadal and Djoker can remain invincible!

IF murray needs to win , I think he needs to learn to contorl his temperament. Maybe tis can help him to win or grab no3:
http://bit.ly/qhjpaO
I hope murray somehow gets to read this article so that he can get motivated to defeat Nadal!

Posted by Christine 09/30/2011 at 01:11 PM

Very nice article indeed Steve.I agree that it might not be the greatest but its one of the most unexpected year. nobody in their dreams must have thought at the start of the year that he will be able to beat Nadal and Federer so consistently. his streak really amazes me and the kind of person he has transformed into. From the angry Djoker, we are seeing a more matured and responsible Djoker plus he is funny too at times! A sign of a maturing person. His temperament has also improved so much : i think this has also been a major reason why he has been able to win. he is calm even when he is losing:

Here is a nice article on his temperament and how murray can laso learn from it: http://bit.ly/paCkWk

Posted by Kane 09/29/2011 at 05:36 PM

i think Murray should focus on controlling his temper rather than clendar issues and prize money. Nadal says it-its understandable but Murray really? You need to focus on winning first GS for your country and not on this dude:
No wonder people have started to write about you and and your temper:
Anger: Difference between Good (McEnroe,Murray) & Great (Federer,Nadal) http://bit.ly/paCkWk

get a hold of yourself otherwise you will go down as player who never won a GS!

Posted by Chris 09/22/2011 at 02:57 PM

There was so much bad going around in US Open this year. I just wonder whats happened to US tennis, we used to have so many great players and examples int he form of Agassi, Sampras. But now we have players like Serena and lot who have set bad examples for the kids to follow. I was watching it with my family and what a let down it was to see that this is the standard they want their followers to follow- very very bad. In this age, where people follow wha their role models do , we need motivation and inspiring stuff. Here is anotheer article which i make my kids also read which cast a positive shadow on tennis: Juan Martin Del Potro - Fall and Rise of the fighter? http://bit.ly/owcb66

Its articles like these that kids need to read so that they can also get motivated and not watch players like serena, roddick!

Posted by pete 09/20/2011 at 09:04 PM

I think Delpotro will take Argentina to victory this year and we will see a new chapter in tennis written again next year. Although people havent given him much credit to him since his return but slowly and slowly he is returning back in form: My & argentinas hero: http://bit.ly/owcb66

HE rocks and is my fav for next year!

loved the bricklayer analogy, steve. and especially for Ferru who briefly worked construction.

Am I happy about Rafa losing to Mayer? No. But I didn't think he played badly. (he even made an overhead!) And Mayer played SO well. He is, after all, ranked 23 in the world. Weird, because I don't think I've ever seen him play. I hope Murray wins the whole thing. Want him to have confidence going into the new season.

I thought it was interesting that when asked about Paris, Rafa was non-committal. All he said was that the season was long for him. So I dont' expect to see him in Paris.

Boy, Tallybolly, you have kept up with this well. I generally ignore these links because I have enough reading to do with tennis.com and plenty other news websites.

ido not agree with you about rafa i do not think he wanted to win.just getting another one of his 1000 series out of the way.he will be on his way home now or out making more money from someone.

Fernando says "The Tignor" is The Jerry Izenberg/Jay Greenberg of Tennis writers.

What does that mean? The Tignor knows. Fernando!

"It’s too bad no one really cares about the fall Masters events"

I care.

"the net, despite the power and spin of the modern ground stroke, is still there for the taking."

And that's one of the reasons why I care: I get to see players exploit quicker courts and bring more variety to the game. Llodra last year in Paris, and in Shanghai Dolgopolov, Mayer and Tomic, while Nishikori benefits from being able to make placements into shots that are forcing on these courts, but only rally extenders that sit up on slower courts.

Anyone who bemoans homogeneity on the men's tour, even a little, should be calling for a retreat from slooooowww courts and heavy balls. Fears that the game would revert to serve, serve, serve & volley, and serve, have been proven wrong (Llodra didn't win Paris, after all). But man, is it more fun to watch a contrast of styles or what?

Do I think the ATP will take this and encourage more tournaments to have quicker courts? Nah. But the fall Masters events still matter, if only to me and the guys trying to make the cut for London.

Another huge advantage of being the no. 6 or no. 12 guy -- you get plenty of rest just when you need it most. And you actually get a chance to work on a few things, if only for a day or three. Still, it beats the heck out of having to fly out of one hub to another and get back on the court in 24 to 48 hours, with too little rest, too little sleep, a mental hangover and sore joints and muscles, only to remember that you had the awful good fortune of winning the event last year so you have a ton of points to defend. Lovely. Yeah, no. 6 ain't such a bad spot to be in.

And this, "tennis's bricklayer," was brilliant.

On another note, I see Bored Poet has returned... as Fernando.

And my friend skip1515 makes a very cogent point about the beauty of the fall campaign on faster hard courts, where players are more often rewarded for venturing inside the service line and putting their fortunes in their own hands.

You'd think Nadals match was the only upset. Ebden did alright too...

"Plus, Mayer played great. [...] Mayer, 28, has always been fatally streaky, and has always had much more game than his results would indicate. Who else can do as many different and strange things on a tennis court—from two-handed volleys to jumping backhands to jumping drop shots—yet make them all fit together smoothly?"

Steve - agree with your observations and thoughts about the match, and I'm glad you took some time to focus on the guy who won. The above quote kind of sums up why I always try to catch Florian's matches, even though they so often end in disappointment and frustration. It was so nice to see it all come together for him for the duration of a match aginst a big opponent on a fairly big stage. Maybe sleep deprivation enhanced my excitement, but what an entertaining display of tennis that was.

and yes (even if I don't love how you presented the #1 vs #6 issue), Ferru as "tennis' bricklayer" is pretty great. I heart that guy so much.

“... that poor old beat-up over-30-year-old Juan Carlos Ferrero...” Wow, how generous of you, Steve! And how about that cheap and simplistic take on Ferrer’s career? I wish you had stopped and thought twice before writing it; for someone who sees philosophical depth in everything Nadal says or does, I am surprised you fail to spot the tragedy in Ferrer’s case. I guess he was aiming for more than just the #6 or the dough back in Australia in January. And for the sake of accuracy: not everybody expects Nadal to win every tournament he enters. ‘cause it’s autumn, no?? And no, I don’t think the internet would blow up if Nadal lost a set to Ferrero. Because Nadal just lost two sets to Florian Mayer and the internet is still only pondering if it should read anything into it. “Nah, it just wasn’t his day!” concludes someone. Let’s not pretend at least that the standards aren’t double, because we all know they are.

never thought i'd ever hear the word "smoothly" when someone is talking about anything related to F. Mayer.

Way to go, Flo.
More of this please and maybe i will watch you again in the future.

It is becoming clear that nadal's game is going down hill.At this rate he will loose to DELPO in DAVIS CUP and may not be in the top ten in 2012.

"never thought i'd ever hear the word "smoothly" when someone is talking about anything related to F. Mayer."

lol - I like him, but I know what you mean; no one used that word today, that's for sure :(

The weird energy stuff is hilarious...I think Murray needs to start the match in straight up freak mode...come out first point with his hair all jacked up, no shirt, cursing, absolutely lose it on his first error, just totally weird out his opponent...get it all out then start playing like an Englishman...I'd love to see it...I always think Murray is just one point away from complete meltdown mode whether it's going good or not and his shirt tugging is funny stuff...just rip off the damn thing and get it over with!

Come on Federer and Djokovic!!!! We need you!

" becoming clear that nadal's game is going down hill.At this rate he will loose to DELPO in DAVIS CUP and may not be in the top ten in 2012.

he may lose to Delpo in DC but I think it will take longer than 2012 for him to drop out of the top ten. Maybe 2013 January?

I think Fernando is a female from the U.S. Steve Holt!

@gupta: Nadal going downhill? Debatable. Out of top 10 in 2012??? His 2011 record is 65-12. He hasn't been lower than #4 since 2005 (before he won his first French). The Djoker owns him right now, but he owns the whole bloody Tour. I suppose that you felt the same way about Federer a couple years ago when the chinks in his armor first appeared. But there he is, 30 yrs old and still in top 4.

Always have and always will love me some JC Ferrero. So happy to see him winning. He still looks pretty good to me.

Sad he has to play Ferrer next since these guys seem to be so close. One is often watching the other play. Too cute.

Am I being overly critical or are the Shanghai fans so new to watching tennis that they don't know any of the customary courtesies? I thought sitting in the top of Ashe during the US Open was awful with the constant talking and walking around but that doesn't affect the players as much as it does the fans. The attendants in Shanghai let anyone in at anytime and the fans don't seem to realize they are distracting the players. What's worse....was watching yesterday when someone with credentials came in during play. Felt sorry to Mohamed Lahyani....no one seemed to be listening to him. Now that this rant is over......

It was great to see JCF winning! I have missed him on the tour!

**so what if fans come in during points..the players are too precious they should get on with it and stop moaning. they are wanting fans to watch and they have a go at them. empty stadiums arnt great...at least the crowd was alot bigger for rafa/wafa...maybe the fans wearnt keen on watching the 1st rd when top 8 seeds wernt playing.

@Chris -
Is that really your name ?
Time and again on these blogs' comments I have seen some random name that makes some one-liner connection to a topic and points with a link to the same blog. Even the sense of language is the same. The name is different.

Are you just one person trying to use this as a place to do some indirect advertising for your blog to get some page-hits ???

In case of the remote possibility thata you ARE Chris and a genuine person who happened to use the same language to point to the same blog as others, without any selfish interest, except to point us readers to an opinion you liked, I apologize.

*** mono-chris or multi-chris. just who is the real chris ?????.

For the second day in a row, it's Ferrero fan-club time on here :) I said it yesterday, I'll say it again - I've been watching tennis for 15 years now, and Juanqui is my absolute favourite. The day he finally does go away will be a truly sad one. Agree about a shame he's playing Ferrer - David might come up one letter short in the surname department, but I fear he may out-mosquito the Mosquito. Wasn't it Ferrer who finally ended JCF's amazing South American clay circuit run last year in Acapulco, after JCF had one their previous final?

if ferrero bts ferrer without the o, he prob be top50 again...whoooo.

No comment on the tight Raonic/Ferrer match?

Milos at least looks good after returning from injury.

I enjoy Jason Goodall much more than the Doug Adler. Very eloquent.

I agree about Ferrero, on all counts. And I've seen him beat Nadal three times during Nadal's best years, showing he still has the tactical smarts of a top player. Long live Juan Carlos! A gentleman's player, for sure.

Goodall does a fine job, as do Adler and Koenig. It's funny when Sam Gore gets mixed in there with Robbie. Come to think of it, Sam's voice quality is similar to Jim Courier's and Goodall's (or am I mixing up Jason with Doug?). Sometime,s it takes me a while to figure out which is which.

The bit about Jason Goodall was clever. But what happened to the absolutely best part of it: "like any other veteran commentator who must rise to the occasion..."? I was laughing out lout when I read it. But Tignor maybe thought it was a bit too stingy and edited it out?

I thought I was alone in liking Goodall and Koenig. I'm glad I'm not. I like them together, working off each other. I keep hearing about how Robbie is biased in favour of Nadal but even if he is, which I'm not at all sure about, it doesn't seem major. Jason Goodall may go in for stock phrases, in fact they both do, but I enjoy Jason's occasional snarkyness too. Adler I'm less keen on, he seems very enamoured of his own opinions and with less humour.

I agree with Northernboy : Milos did very well, considering he is just back from a nearly 6 months interruption ! Welcome back, Milos !

the homepage title for this was thoughts from afar. never before noticed that afar=rafa backwards. how about that for a completely irrelevant fact?

"He's drawn first blood--almost"--ha ha,I think that's going to run through my head every time a BP comes up from now on! Rafa definitely has a tendency to tighten up on those second-serve BPs, but I don't think it's unique to him. Seems pretty common among players--they're either too conservative and end up hitting a floaty return into the middle of the court (Rafa, often), or, feel pressure to make something happen and smother it into the net (e.g. Roger). One (unfortunate) difference I've noticed this year in Rafa's game is that he's often tensing up on BPs against. Last year he saved so many he joked he was a "specialist"; this year, he's been giving a lot away with nervous UFEs and even some DFs. All part of the game, I guess.

Really enjoying these Shanghai journals, btw!

Steve...your posts are so poetic and beautiful,I don't need to go to Shanghai (or wherever) to see the match.I get satisfied just reading your *notebook* or *random thoughts*

But tell me this...do you get disappointed at so few *comments* when you pen your thoughts *for-the-world* at large?
And Mr.Bodo randomly posts those Around The World In 1000words and he gets a 1000comments,which are mainly absurd.Unfair, right?ya,I think so too.

Steve, can you pass on this message to the ATP commentary-team?Which is:"Please, please show yourselves on TV"
I so badly want to put a face to their wonderful, beautiful, fantastic commentary.I simply ADORE the guys.Robby's nasal accent...my,my,my...I like that!

And can you dedicate a post to Goodall,Gore,Keonig and Adler?Like who are they? Are they family-guys?Where are they all from?If they are so good just talking-tennis...how come they never went far, playing tennis? And do they like their *dream jobs*? OR do they crib, sulk and complain like the ATP players, about long year, long flights, and having to sit court side, and all else that come with being ATP staff/employees? I hope not.

I'm writing this as I'm watching Lopez V/S Berdych and boy,I cannot stop thinking about *Deliciano* and how yummy(handsome actually) he really is!But how can you blame Judy, right? If her son is shabby,un-kept and un-tidy,she better pick another guy!Hmmmmm.
And Lopez's serve and volley is simply aweeeeesome.

Tallboyslim,

That blog link is posted by one APEKSHA too,who comments here, occasionally.Or is Apeksha and Chris same?

Crazy and weird...

"He smells first blood?"

anyone is better than Luke "toppy lob!" Jensen

"He had gone through his usual series of poses—testy, sullen, surly, glum—and finished in exhausted resignation."

Lol. Pretty much sums up every Verdasco match, eh? :)

Love your write-ups, Steve. Something to look forward to every day. Thank you.

I'm pretty sure intentionally missing a first serve break point down against Nadal is a bad idea.

Nadal is out...maybe there was something wrong...

I liked this summation of the day!

Long Live Juan Carlos! You are my hero - the breakthrough for Davis Cup for Spain - nobody can take that away from you! Juan Carlos forever!

All Novak has done so far in this year is fantasic with only Roger Federer being able to beat him at an incredibly high quality match. Rafa is here to stay only if he is able to play at the somewhat higher level. He is a hussler, competitive athlete with great skills. Vamos Rafa!
