Nice win by Jarkko over a seeded albeit slumping Wawrinka. Hopefully the Finn can rekindle some of his form in a tournament where he's been a former finalist and semifinalist.

And no to a permanent Monday final. The US Open would be shooting itself in the foot by doing that. They'll either have to be switching channels (for the CBS affiliates who do carry it) if they do an afternoon start or find themselves competing against Monday Night Football and the work schedules of millions of Americans (and by extension, sleep schedules) if they start at night.

Interpol09: What about DC which is the Friday after the USO? The Monday final is not going to happen.

LOL, BBC has a video of someone who apparently "captured" Ghaddafi had a golden gun.

All I'm thinking about now is James Bond did it.

And NP, it's human nature to feel some sympathy whenever you find out anyone dies. However, I can't feel too sorry that a man who had some role in the deaths of thousands of people is no longer around.

The only thing that disappoints me is that he wasn't tried for his crimes. Both for justice and for the hilarity a trial would have produced. Some of the war criminals in The Hague have nothing on Ghaddafi's insane ramblings.

I agree that a Monday Final is not going to work because of the Monday Night Football competition and more importantly, the DC being only a few days later. They should make the semis on Friday and have one of them be a 'primetime' match'. Shouldn't be too much TV competition on a Friday night.

Interpol09, Gaddafi's ramblings might have been insane, but I doubt they were more long-winded than Castro's. (You've gotta read them thru to see how ridiculous they are. They repeat themselves on & on & on.) Or Chavez's for that matter. Apparently that's something the majority of dictators have in common.

Gotta head out for a sec. Later.

Nice Pic Pete...We will miss you. Have become used to your daily updates...people who want good tennis news, here is one: Federer Era- IS it over after his slip to rank 4: http://bit.ly/nUKaLC

Its a nice article!I would suggest worth a read over the week!

Wilson75,
CBS and their Super Saturday makes a lot of revenue from the ATP playing their SF. If the ATP SF are on Friday, CBS stands to lose a lot of money as they will have to find other programming because I believe they will want to keep the WTA F on Saturday night.

MA: CBS can schedule the mens doubles F and the WTA F in the day session on Saturday. If I'm not mistaken the ratings for the primetime WTA F haven't been very good in recent years. I just don't see how a Monday F as being desirable for CBS.

Saw Washington State's Grand Coulee Dam way back when. Constructed in the 1930s-early 1940s and subsequently expanded, it "is the largest electric power-producing facility in the United States[3] and one of the largest concrete structures in the world," according to Wikipedia.

In exciting news from the Juan Carlos Ferrero front, he states in a blog that he is considering returning to the tour in next week's Vienna tournament or the following week's Valencia tournament.

Having hurt his ankle last week in Shanghai, he should be mindful of what happened last year. He badly sprained his ankle in Auckland, which, according to his camp, led to intermittent knee problems later in the season due to his favoring his ankle, and, ultimately, surgery.

Hopefully, Juanqui will be able to soon fully heal and grace the tour with his elegant game (when he's not limping or gagging).

It seems to me, if the tennis schedule could handle it, that moving the U.S. Open up a week and having the men's final Monday be Labor Day, CBS would be quite happy with the change. (I'm not sure that the television stations in other countries will be happy, but the U.S. stations would be OK.)

dave g: The Labour Day F poses another problem i.e. the calendar. What happens to last week before the USO? Are they going to move the WS New Haven Dallas events to an earlier date on the calendar. If the TDs are ok with that, then the Labour Day F is possible.

Wilson75,
Good point about putting the ATP doubles F and WTA F on Saturday afternoon. Think you are correct about the primetime F have not done well recently. As you know, the WS are the reason why CBS did a primetime broadcast to begin with.

I wasn't sure New Haven would survive as a WTA-only event again, with that calendar slot. I don't think it's particularly well-attended, and aside from Scandinavia's #1, doesn't draw enough top players. Is Dallas really a vital part of the calendar that can't be let go?

Scheduling the Ladies Final in the Saturday Day Session doesn't seem fair to them - what's next, sticking their final at some mystery hour in between the men's semis again? But even though I went to Flushing for what turned out to be 15 minutes of tennis this year, and the Open has been rain-plagued for the last few years, it hasn't always been like this, and will not always be like this in the future. Completing the first round matches in 2 days instead of 3 seems like a better solution to me than a permanent Monday final - or a Labor Day final.

Saw some of the Dimitrov/Chela match earlier. Kunitsyn/Tipsa, Kunitsyn up a set after a very tight TB. Looking forward to Tomic/Monfils and Dodig/Nalbandian.

Not a good loss for A-Dog. Chardy can be tough, but Alex needs to win those matches.

Rough day for Pervak too. Double bagel to Marion? Ouch.

MA: Yeah and I don't think the ratings for the USO women's F is going to reach those heights again so I think may be a good thing for CBS to move it back to the afternoon.

tina: Why wouldn't it be fair to the women to move the women's final to Saturday afternoon? Under a new plan, if good sense prevails at CBS, the USO schedule will have the women playing the SF on Thursday instead of Friday. That's enough rest for them and they will be main event on Saturday. The other slams do it like that.

what a beautiful landscape that is ! enjoy your vacation , Pete

I am just not sure what the US Open people are thinking. A Monday final ? Well , heck , we've had one for 4 years now- let's just make it official. That does not seem very well thought out to me. More reactionary than anything. Do something with a plan - an idea to make the whole system better. First off - put a roof on one or two of those big courts. That would help .

Moving the dates might help . Putting the final weekend on Labor Day weekend does hold possibilities. Except that - traditionally the last weekend of summer has been a huge travel week. And I would guess that huge crowds turn out in Flushing Meadow to see more than just a limited number of matches. The hustle and bustle of the crowd on the holiday , coupled with the excitement mid week of a slam is just a huge crowd pleaser and ratings boon. I don't see the USTA changing that . I do wish they would eliminate the stupid Super Saturday thing. Put a day between the finals and semis. Give the competitors a day of rest. It would make for better tennis.
I have always liked the Wimbledon method . Ladies semis on Thursday , men's on Friday. Ladies Final on Saturday - men's Sunday . It could be done .
As someone upthread suggested get rid of the 3 day first round . That gives you a bit more flexibility.

Even tarps would help cover the courts and speed up the drying time.

In the Open era, there have been far more USO tournaments that kept on schedule than delayed finals. late summer rain is to be expected, what was highly unusual this year was the impact of hurricane season on the Northeast, which is normally spared.

Keo breaks for the first set over Ana, 6-3. Oh, my.

Sherlock - Double breadstick FROM Marion -please. ;-)) French bread is SO good!

So, wait, for those of us who can't keep a single thin in our aged heads, isn't the real scheduling problems of the USO of their on making in that they do something hinky to the first round and so everything is delayed from the get go? With the lack of a roof just making things worse? Because all the other slams manage to NOT have a Stoopid Super Saturday and/or bulge over into Monday. I need a refresher course.

tina- yes, but, the year before there was a tropical storm that postponed the final til Monday, and the year before THAT there was a hurricane hit. Hannah? It is funny, but most of my memories of the earlier USOs are people suffering in the heat.

How are we all enjoying climate change so far? ;-))

Pete,

I'm so ENVIOUS of you.You are always doing stuff, which I dream of.

Milk-River?Isn't this the name given by the famous Lewis and Clark,(expedition?)Hmmmmm.I've always wondered (and ended up disappointed) why references to Lewis and Clark scarcely appeared in (US) history books?Especially when both of them were American Pioneers!

Do me a favour...
Pls do a write up on this topic after you return...Now wouldn't that be just wonderful?Like the one you did after *True Grit* movie.

You know what...you are this walking talking encyclopedia.Your knowledge is so immense and vast, and you also cover Tennis.HUH...what a glorified life you lead, indeed!I'm so glad to have experienced *you* through all your masterful write-ups!Sage Bodo, indeed!

I'm feeling so down and out sans TMF and this can cheer me up.What a low season, indeed!I dread the day TMF retires.I cannot wait for him to just show-up,on courts.Lose/win,I'll never miss another match of the great TMF.Lesson well learnt, for sure!

And the WTA YEC seems quite shallow(yet interesting)????

The USO is not going to be moved back a week, so forget that, even though I wish the USO finished before the football season started. As of now, the USO final falls on the first weekend of American football and putting the final on Monday permanently means it will forever be opposite the opening night of Monday Night Football. And besides, I'm sure CBS makes a ton of money being able to televise tennis all day over the long Labor Day weekend.

No doubt they make more money with the mens semis on Saturday versus Friday. But what about the womens semis? Those aren't on a weekend and nobody is bitching about that? Put the mens semis on Friday. Make one of them a day match (if CBS can't televise that, then give it to TTC or ESPN), and put the second match as a primetime match. CBS should be able to televise that. It's not like the new shows have premiered yet! Friday night should be wide-open.

The stupid thing is that if they don't move the semis, then they really aren't addressing the rain/schedule problem. If it rains on Saturday, the semis move to Sunday and you still have no day off. The only way to give them more breathing room in case of inclement weather is to fix the schedule earlier than the final. What idiots!

CL, he he. Evidently, Miss Pervak enjoyed the French bakery. :)

3 and 2 for Keo over Ana. Wow.

Good win for Anne but bad loss for Ana as she won only 5 games in her preparation for Bali in 2 weeks.

schoofs of the world, unite!

also, keo just beat ivanovic. how? well i wonder...

Lol, Biz. Schoofs Mania is spreading like wildfire!

Currently 199, I wonder how far she'll move up next week? What a great experience for her. Too bad today's win came at the hands of Marino. Boo!

How lovely to see Anne get the win over Ana. I'm not sure how much the back injury Ana has influenced the outcome but a wins a win :)

I wonder if she will still play Bali. I have to admit I didn't think she should have been offered a wild card in the first place.

Regarding the events the week prior to the US Open, I don't think the tournament directors would be pleased with a move. Particularly with New Haven and Winston-Salem, those tournaments coincide with the return of students to the campuses the events are hosted on.

With the return of students and their families to help the students move in, there is a significant number of "tourists" that might wish to watch some tennis after getting settled on campus.

Besides, I think the USTA is happier with the middle weekend being Labor Day weekend. I'd guess that the USTA could make more money with the third/fourth round and the gobs of fans and tickets able to sprawl throughout the BJKNTC than for the semis and finals that are realistically limited to one stadium.

Goodness, I think Pironkova's outfit has shrunk in the wash. I mean, the skirt was not long to start with but it's barely more than a belt today.

reckon ~150 as of today, Sherls. but her run is far from over, natch.

hrmph. bernie had bouquets of BPs, but la monf's the one who's a break up.

And Pironkova and her tiny skirt get the early break following a forehand error from Sveta.

Thanks, Biz. He he, far from over, indeed! :)

"And Pironkova and her tiny skirt get the early break"

Lol, Claire. :)

pironkova gets broken back. her skirt doesn't feel that short to me. i'm not opposed to it losing a bit more length is what i'm saying.

kuz looks good in the hotpants btw. (well, as far she's able to. it's all relative)

monf with the set 6-4. boo.

Vika has the early break against Brianti. I don't imagine Vika will have much problem negotiating her match.

And in Moscow Sveta got the break straight back and holds easily. She's still rocking the shorts

Claire,
I think Victoria wins this one easy. If Victoria wins Luxembourg this week, she would lose a net of 180 pts due to winning Moscow last year.
